Do It Yourself Precautions Minimize

When performing any inspection or maintenance work on your vehicle, always exercise care to prevent personal injury to yourself or any damage to your vehicle. Here are some general precautions that should be closely observed in carrying out any servicing operation.

  • Do not run the engine in any enclosed spaces, such as a garage, with out adequate ventilation as Carbon Monoxide is present in exhaust fumes. It is colourless, odourless and potentially lethal.
  • Do not work on or near the engine when the engine is hot or running. Always turn it off and allow it to cool.
  • Keep any flames or sparks away from the vehicle battery, as well as all fuel and related parts. When working near these items do not smoke and turn off any mobile phones.
  • Never connect or disconnect either the battery or any electronic devices while the ignition is switched on.
  • When connecting the battery cables, pay particular attention to their polarities. Never connect the positive cable to the negative terminal or the negative cable to the positive terminal.
  • Bear in mind that the ignition circuits have extremely high voltages that could easily provide a severe electric shock. Take care not to cause any short circuits as the vehicle battery can provide high currents that can cause damage or even start fires.
  • Never get under the vehicle while a jack supports it. If it is necessary to work under a vehicle always use quality safety stands that conform to Australian Standards and always service the vehicle on solid level ground.
