A Rack For Roof & Bike Minimize

A family vacation just wouldn't be the same without bikes, a surfboard and other sporting equipment. But of course, with the family aboard, this gear isn't going to fit in the car; you're going to need a bike rack, roof racks and a tow bar.

But don't leave things until the last minute. Organise these accessories now and make sure you know how to fit them properly.

Bike racks have been a common accessory on vehicles for many years, but are you aware that it is now compulsory for motorists to display a VicRoads bike rack number plate on all bicycle racks that obscure vehicle number plates?

The bike rack number plate must be attached at all times when the bicycle rack is mounted on a vehicle, and the number must be the same as the vehicle registration.

Bike rack number plates are available from VicRoads for $21.00 each. Contact VicRoads on (03) 9345 4309 or (03) 9345 4360.

If you intend to use the bike rack at night, the number plate must be illuminated and clearly visible from 20 metres away. Illumination kits are available from bicycle retail outlets.
The driver's vision through the rear vision mirror, as well as vehicle lights and indicators, must not be impaired by the rack or bicycle/s.

Keep in mind that you can be fined up to $110 if you don't comply with these new regulations.

Don't drive with an empty bike rack attached; protruding carriers without bicycles can cause injury to pedestrians when vehicles are parked, or damage to other vehicles behind. You can also be fined.

Most bike racks are mounted on a vehicle's towbar. Make sure the towbar on your vehicle is strong enough to carry the bicycles and is securely attached to the vehicle. If you want to check the towing equipment on your vehicle, or need a towbar to be fitted, see a VACC member.

Roof racks are also a popular accessory for summer for carrying water skis and surfboards.

There are both permanent and temporary roof racks available. While the temporary racks are quite easy to take on and off, the more permanent variety, such as those that use pad or track mounts, require holes to be drilled into the roof of the car.

It's probably a good idea to have permanent roof racks professionally fitted to ensure the job is done properly and that you don't decrease the resale value of your car. If not sealed correctly, water can leak into the cabin and cause corrosion as well as damp carpet and trims.

When driving with roof racks for long distances, it's worth stopping occasionally to ensure the roof rack and its load remains secure.

Tie-down straps always come in handy when securing items to racks. They can also be used to stop bikes swaying around on the bike rack. It's a good idea to keep a few spare in the car.
Loaded roof racks and bike racks can often affect the handling of your car, so you should modify your driving accordingly. Driving with roof racks fitted can also affect fuel consumption.
